Race Driver: GRID will feature the most extensive range of events in the series, combining official circuit-based championships with Race Driver: GRIDs road races and urban street competitions.

During a long narrow straightaway in a Koenigsegg CCXR, I squeezed the acceleration trigger and felt the engine kick in. The crowd blew by. The road exploded onto my screen, and for the first time ever in a racing game, I was driving so fast I could not control my car. I hit 200 mph--the 200 mph achievement appeared on my screen--glanced off a side panel, and careened into the opposite side, and totaled my car. All in a matter of two seconds.
Then I hit rewind and did it right.
Codemasters' newest racing effort in the Pro Racer/Toca series, Grid, tops the studio's previous efforts because it succeeds in delivering fine-tuned controls, worthy AI, and above all, an exceptional sense of speed. In Dirt, Codemasters' Ego engine showed off with high-end physics; here, Grid delivers a heightened sense of speed that is countered and balanced with a new feature, a rewind function that gives you the chance to redo that race-ending, car-destroying collision you wished you could have redone. Think of it as a Prince or Persia function for your car.
A first-rate sense of speed isn't the only thing Codemasters worked on. Like last year's Dirt (which is the new name for the remade Colin McRae series), Grid offers an international appeal with a special emphasis on American sensibilities. The one-syllable name is coupled with a heavy and often annoying "Ford tough" branding interface, and at least one-third of the game is aimed on racing American cars, streets, and race types. The Ford Mustang Boss 302, Dodge Viper SRT-10, and the Jupiter Eagleray MK5 (for stock car racing) stand out as just a few of the American vehicles you'll drive, sell, and buy new or at a discount on the newly implemented eBay online store.
Not everyone likes fast but poor-handling American vehicles, and the remaining two-thirds of the game offer a rich balance of touring car racing, endurance racing, Le Mans challenges, illegal street races, and drift challenges in Europe and Japan. Dozens of official tracks such as Germany's Nurburgring Grand Prix Circuit and England's Donington Park National Circuit B provide a familiar feel for racing diehards, while Japan's Mount Haruna foothills and its variety of drift courses satisfy a different driving sensibility. The Le Mans series is set up as the ultimate endurance challenge in Grid, and it's tough; one false move and you'll have to rewind or start over. Also, although it's a 24-hour race in reality, each Le Mans hour in Grid equates to roughly one minute in the game--thankfully.
