Baldur's Gate
Ever since you could remember yourself, your foster-father Gorion has been taking care of you, treating you like his own son, and teaching you everything you know. Even though your true origin is still shrouded in mystery, you feel that the little town Candlekeep is your home, and Gorion is your strong, loving father. But your happiness is shattered to pieces once Gorion takes you on a journey. You are attacked by a group of assassins. From what they say you understand they are after you. You barely escape, but Gorion dies in battle. The people of Candlekeep won't let you in, because they are afraid to attract to themselves the wrath of those who are trying to kill you. Only Imoen, another orphan child who was brought up by Gorion and whom you treat as a sister, is willing to be by your side. You have nothing, no place to call your home, just your companion and the wide world in front of you. And thus your journey begins...
"Baldur's Gate" is a role-playing game that uses the rule set of Advanced Dungeons & Dragon (AD&D). You create your hero by choosing one of the available classes (fighter, thief, mage, priest, ranger, and druid, including sub-classes, dual- and multi-class characters), his (or her) alignment, weapon proficiency etc. For the combat system, a special engine called Infinity Engine is used: the battles are turn-based, but are so fast-paced that the player has an illusion of fighting in real time. You can pause the battle at any time and assign commands (such a spells) to your party members. You can also freely move them around during battles. Set in the universe of Forgotten Realms, "Baldur's Gate" is the first part of the saga that lets you explore various towns and wilderness, undertake many side-quest, and find companions for your long journey.
Baldur's Gate: Tales Of The Sword Coast
This add-on to the widely popular Baldur's Gate gives you new items, voices, abilities, and quests. This does not offer an extension to the main plot of the game but offers you four new quests, all of which are very large and will take hours to complete. It adds new areas to the game world, including a town named Ulgoth's Beard and a large dungeon, Durlag Tower. The game is played from an overhead view and is very much just click-and-play gaming. The game is set in the most popular realm for Advanced Dungeons And Dragons, the Forgotten Realms.
Badlur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate 2 is a party-based roleplaying game using the AD&D rules.
Welcome to the beautiful land of Amn, where the sun always shines and evil mages grow and prosper. One of these is the powerful sorcerer Irenicus, who takes delight in studying mortal offspring of the gods -- such as you. Remember Baldur's Gate 1? You've been revealed to be a child of Bhaal (aka Lord of Terror, Bringer of Destruction, and so on), and your battle against the evil side of your soul is the main theme in Baldur's Gate 2. At your side: The well-known companions Imoen, Jaheira and Minsc (and his hamster Boo, of course) as well as a score of new potential party members. All in all, there are 16 NPCs to join you on your journey; however, your party consists of a maximum of 6 characters.
As in Baldur's Gate 2, the frequent battles are real-time, but can be paused at any time with the space key. You may then think over tactical decisions, issue new orders or chose a spell. There's plenty of those: With over 300 magical formulae, the repertoire has almost tripled since Badur's Gate. Upon character creation, you can chose three new classes (sorcerer, monk, barbarian) and a lot of new specializations for the already existing classes; a paladin can become a dragon slayer or an inquisitor, for example. The weapon categories have been split up; instead of specializing in blades, you now have to chose between long swords, two-handed swords, bastard swords, katanas and scimitars. All in all, there are 20 weapon categories and 4 fighting skills like “two weapons”.
The backgrounds may now be viewed in the resolution of 800x600 pixels, as well as the old 640x480. The game also supports 3D accelerators for improved lighting effects.
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal
Your journeys have taken you far. From your humble beginnings as a youth in the security of Candlekeep, to the depths of slaved-worked mines, to the cloak-and-dagger politics of Baldur's Gate, to your final confrontation with your brother Sarevok. You have been as far down as the capital city of Amn and had to deal with the depraved obsessions of the madman Jon Irenicus and an army of the undead. You have seen the death of friends, gained new companions, met lovers, and dealt with the death of the only father you have ever know. You have been forced to come to grips with the fact that you are a son of the murder god, Bhaal. After much hardship and toil it has come down to this. It all ends here in Tethyr. War is waging and as the Bhaal-spawn battle for dominance, you stand in the center of the struggle. It is time to end your questing and get the answers you have sought for so very long.
Baldur's Gate II: The Throne of Bhaal is the final chapter in an epic saga of games following the adventures of your character through the Forgotten Realms universe. You will encounter new characters, new lands, new items, quests, monsters, and the answers you so desperately deserve.
