Sims 2: University

The Sims 2 University
The new college life experience is something of a letdown, but the new items and strategic options more than make up for it.
There are three things you can count on: death, taxes, and Sims expansion packs. We can do without the first two, but we'll happily take the latter. The original The Sims received a whopping seven expansions, and now The Sims 2 receives its first pack in the form of The Sims 2 University. Cynics might argue that this is all overkill, but when a game is a huge creative and commercial success like The Sims 2, who wouldn't want more? The Sims 2 University sure gives you more. You get a whole new young adult life stage, plus a new influence system, new careers, new interactions, new items and decorating schemes, and, of course, a whole new experience: university life. That new life experience is something of a letdown, but the new items and strategic options more than make up for it.

Many fans were skeptical when the theme of this expansion pack was first announced, but have no fear. Even if the college-lifestyle angle doesn't appeal to you, you'll still get plenty of features that apply to the core game, too. There's a new influence system that lets your sims make other characters do their bidding, from sprucing up the yard to picking a fight with someone to playing with a sibling. Your sims gain influence points by fulfilling "wants," which is akin to how the existing aspiration system works. Now, many familiar goals, like a sim's child making good grades, grant both aspiration and influence points. The maximum number of influence points your sims can store depends on the number of friends they have. In the past, sims who reached the top of their career paths could forget about the hard work of constantly cultivating numerous friendships. But if you want to use the influence system to its fullest, you'll need to keep a bunch of friends throughout the lives of your sims.

The Sims 2: H&M Fashion Stuff

The Sims 2: H&M Fashion Stuff
Let your Sims get dolled up in H&M fashion gear. With the announcement of The Sims 2 H&M Fashion Stuff came a lot of complaints from the community about EA selling out and having in game advertisements now. However if that doesn't bother you than welcome to the best stuff pack yet! In this pack comes new fashions based off of real H&M clothes.

There are also new walls and floors and objects to go in your new H&M stores. This pack comes with a ton of new outfits for females, all in different color schemes, that range from 70's themed dresses to modern club wear. For the first time our Sims have clothes that don't look like crap and look like someone in real life might actually wear them. Most of the outfits are also available for teen girls to have as well. There is also 3 new outfits for little girls. While men do get new outfits, the number isn't anywhere near the amount females get which is one of the downsides of this pack. The men get some great summer clothes and some more formal looking outfits. They also get 3 new swimsuits. The outfits are made for teen boys as well but no new outfits for little boys. This pack also includes some great new objects for stores such as new dressing rooms, mannequins, clothing racks, cash registers, and signs to hang showing off the latest styles. There is also a great new counter that has a cool display in stores. Besides objects this pack also includes many new walls in floors to match the H&M stores but also look good in other stores. There is also a new two story door, window, and column. Also a few new songs in the pop sections to go with your new modern store. All in all this pack is great! It adds many new outfits and great new store objects. If you can get by the fact that it has H&M written all over it than it will be a great addition to your Sims collection.

The Sims 2: Bon Voyage

The Sims 2: Bon Voyage
Bon Voyage is a worthwhile expansion that makes plenty of neat little additions to The Sims 2.

The Sims series' unique formula of simulating the lives of little computer people as they live, love, and go to the bathroom has been successful more or less from the start. Both the original game and the solid sequel, The Sims 2, have consistently stayed interesting, thanks to a never-ending stream of expansion packs. And Bon Voyage, the latest expansion for The Sims 2, adds a good amount of variety and some handy new options that make managing your computerized families' lives even easier.
The focus of this expansion is vacations--specifically, moving your family of "sims" out of the house and checking them into a fabulous resort hotel, then hitting one of three different vacation spots: sunny beaches, tea gardens, or ancient ruins. At these vacation spots, your sims try out leisure activities, collect souvenirs, and interact with the locals, who may teach your sims new "social" gestures specific to the area.
Even though three vacation venues may not sound like much, each setting offers multiple hotels with different price ranges, but all of them have enough in the way of basic services to help your sims survive their off-time. The better resort hotels have swimming pools, hot tubs, and other relaxing activities, but they all have handy, round-the-clock room service to feed your hungry sims; beds, showers, and TV sets to take care of their fatigue, hygiene, and entertainment needs; as well as plenty of other guests to socialize with. Since going on vacation suspends the regular flow of time from their home and professional lives (so they don't have to worry about missing a day of work), staying in a hotel makes life much easier for your in-game family.
Once you're settled in a hotel, you can take a cab (or hoof it) to a nearby tourist lot. There's a decent variety of tourist areas for each venue, including shopping and recreation areas where your characters can collect many different items, such as fresh fruit from the local market, or hidden treasure from rummaging through the cabin of an abandoned pirate ship. There are plenty of new social interactions and new activities to try at these venues as well, such as building sand castles or swimming in the oceans, which make excellent group activities. This helps shift the game's focus away from always worrying about your sims' needs (making sure they aren't hungry, tired, or bored) and makes it easier to focus on getting your virtual family into a fun-filled group activity quicker. And the ample population of other sims at both resorts and tourist areas provide plenty of opportunities for characters to network, make new friends, and learn new social gestures (such as bowing, which the kimono-wearing locals at the tea garden can teach you).
When your vacation is over, your sims check out of the hotel and can return home with plenty of mementos. Aside from purchased or scrounged souvenirs, which may appeal to pack rat players who simply must collect everything, your sims may have photos taken with the game's new photo camera, which lets you snap family photos (or ask a kind passerby to get a group shot for you). In addition, if your sims had a great time on their vacation, they'll be able to choose useful bonuses to their abilities on returning home, such as increased productivity at work, faster skill learning, and, perhaps most useful, an additional slot for their immediate "wants"--the short-term personal goals each sim carries around that, when fulfilled, can lead them to true happiness.

The Sims 2: Teen Style Stuff

The Sims 2: Teen Style Stuff
The Sims 2 gets more fashion possibilities with the Teen Style Stuff add-on.

Sims 2 Teen Style Stuff..... What's there to say? It's yet another Sims 2 expansion pack, but this time around it does something good. Sort of.
As you can guess by the title Teen Style is mainly for teens. It adds so pretty nice clothing and hair for teens, but it's nothing you couldn't get at a sims fan site for free. Basicly everything else Teen Style adds makes it a fairly good stuff pack. It adds new wallpaper, flooring, TVs, bookshelves, beds, carpets, you name it. Everything has one of three things. Goth, Surfer, or prep. The Preppy stuff is probably the most limited in the pack, it's basicly just for girls.
Give your teen Sims everything they need to express their unique style withThe Sims 2 Teen Style Stuff! Now your teen Sims can show some attitude withall-new, unique furniture, decor items, fashions and more with threedistinct themes - "Goth", "Thrasher" and "Socialite". Give your Sims a newphone, stereo, TV and other gadgets to keep them up to date and in touchwith their friends. Make sure your Sims are always sporting the latest teenfashions including track suits, designer jeans, and yoga outfits. Let youryoung Sims express themselves in ways only teenagers can!

Sims 2: Free Time

SIMS 2: FREE TIME

What time is it? It’s Sims 2 expansion time. After all, it’s been about six months and Maxis/EA keeps riding that franchise by expanding the possibilities of the world’s (arguably) biggest single-player gaming franchise.

The last outing, back in September 2007, addressed holiday time for the Sims with the Bon Voyage expansion. Now it is time to address what the sims do with spare time in the aptly named FreeTime expansion.

For those who may not know what the Sims 2 is, it is micro-managing at the ultimate level. You control the lives of characters in the game, from eating to sleeping to personal hygiene, as well as their social lives and professional careers. Kids have to be told to do homework and foster relationships with parents and others.

Expansions have included Night Life, University, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons and the aforementioned Bon Voyage. There are been additional content packs as well like Family Fun Stuff, H&M Fashion Stuff, Glamour Life Stuff, Holiday Fun Stuff … well, you get the idea.

Each expansion comes with it’s own problems (for the full rant, see the Bon Voyage story), which essentially means that any personalized or custom content has to be saved to a hard drive prior to installation of the new expansion and then moved back over into the files the game creates. Some content won’t work otherwise.

Ok, on to what FreeTime offers …

This expansion truly caters to spare time and expands that to include interactions with others based off that time. There are new activities that translate out to the new hobby meter. Sims indulge in a certain activity and the meter grows. If they maintain their enthusiasm and keep the meter up, they are visited by a representative from that particular hobby’s secret club and can visit secret lots. Friends and/or a family member can be invited to visit the secret club’s lot.

The breakdown for the clubs is music and dance, arts and crafts, sports, fitness, scientific, nature lovers, gaming, cuisine, tinkering, and, finally, film and literature. Each of the general areas breaks down into entertaining categories. Music and dance leads to ballet, violin, synthesizer and nursery rhymes; arts and crafts gives way to pottery, sewing, frames (for paintings), and an activity table; sports fans can practice soccer kicks, a football toss, or play basketball; fitness fiends will be able to jog, or ride a stationary bike; for the scientists there is an ant habitat and a telescope; nature lovers can collect bugs, bird watch or go hiking; gamers can partake in either video or board games; for the cuisine lovers there is a cooking competition, a nectar bar and serving platters of food; the tinkerer can tinker, control remote-control cars or helicopters, play with a model train or restore cars; and the film and literature fans can read, discuss books in a group, write a novel or watch a movie.

Now some of these elements were available before – players just didn’t benefit from doing them.
The expansion comes with five new careers – entertainer, dancer, architect, intelligence (start as a detective and work up to the head of the Sims CIA) and oceanographer. The expansion also has a new aspirations meter with secondary aspirations added. Sim parents can study parenting, there is a mysterious gypsy that will grant three wishes and as a Sim ages, they can designate three NPCs to age with them. Prior to the latter change, NPCs stayed at one age and generally when a playable character aged, they left friends behind.

Of course, the expansion does come with new clothes, but even better is the way that players can associate one neighborhood with another. In previous iterations, if you went on vacation, you had to return to your home neighborhood before you could go to another neighborhood (read that as an expansion neighborhood). With FreeTime, you can go from University directly to Nightlife, or a vacation spot to a university without the stop back home.
Ok, that is all great, but one of the best new elements is the ability to tinker with a neighborhood after it has been created. You can open the cheat console (control+shift+C) and type in “modifyNeighborhoodTerrain on” (no quote marks) and that allows you to raise or lower any terrain area. This will enable you to eliminate a mountain that is interfering with your town’s expansion.

It needs to be noted that the disc received for this was not the retail disc, but rather an advance burn. What that means is that there were some elements that were a tad annoying that might be corrected on the retail code. For example, at times the sims exhibited persistent and very stubborn free will in that they flat out refused to do what they were being told to do – like eat when their hunger meter was very, very, very low. Instead, they sat on the couch watching television and the instruction would appear and then drop from the queued screen.
The game’s controls are more or less the same, while the graphics engine is the same and the sound has had marginal additions.
What FreeTime offers is good stuff. The clubs are nice but the real benefit is linking neighborhoods and terrain modification. Rather than patch in stuff like this, Maxis packages the changes into an expansion. FreeTime is not a must-have, but it is a solid addition to the game’s overall scope.

Review Scoring Details for The Sims 2: FreeTime
Gameplay: 6.8

Free will seems to have been a bit of a problem with the disc received. This was not a retail, so maybe the dev team had some time to tweak it a bit, but with the disc received, a sim would be very hungry and refuse to get up off the couch to go it when told to.
Graphics: 6.5

A few additions in terms of new physical content, plus the hobby graphics, but this is the same engine and the game looks the same.
Sound: 6.5

Not much to write home about.
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
Concept: 7.0

There is some good stuff here, but it seems that with each expansion there is a teaser of what is possible and the game does not quite go far enough (as in, the logical advancement of something is done incrementally to leave content for another expansion). The whole concept of “FreeTime” could easily have been incorporated into Bon Voyage to create a more robust expansion that dealt with down time from work and such. Instead, it is broken into a couple of expansions.

Overall: 7.0

The ability to rework some of the terrain in existing neighborhoods is very nice, but it should go a little further. Still the game does offer something more than merely adding a new zone/neighborhood and that makes it a solid addendum to the Sims 2 franchise.

The Sims 2

The Sims 2

A player's Sims can experience a life generally reflective of reality through events such as working, marrying, having children, learning new skills, engaging in relationships, partying etc. Also, the Sims can experience fictional actions such as seeing a ghost, being abducted by aliens and having male pregnancy, or being visited by the Grim Reaper.

If you were wondering, The Sims 2 is a great sequel and a great game in its own right, and it's recommedable to just about anyone. For some, especially the devoted fans that have enjoyed the first game's open-ended gameplay, which was all about controlling the lives of autonomous little computer people, this is all that really needs to be said. But considering that The Sims 2 is the sequel to what is reportedly the most successful computer game ever (and that's not even counting its many expansion packs), the new game almost seems like a victim of its own success. Yes, it introduces plenty of new features that enhance the gameplay that was so popular in the original game, but it doesn't drastically refresh it. It also features plenty of options to play with, but it seems like it could've used even more content. Then again, you could simply say that EA and Maxis are making sure the game has room to grow with future updates--and there's no denying that The Sims 2's additions will give dedicated fans of the series plenty of stuff to do.

The appearance editors go hand in hand with genetics, which takes the ability to create a family of sims and builds it out further, though what you get out of this new feature depends entirely on what you put into it. Essentially, this new system lets sims pass on genetic information to their children. When creating a new family, you can have the game randomly generate that family's children based on the parent's appearance and personality (and you can further edit the child's appearance and personality however you like, if you prefer). Depending on your preferences, you may find yourself messing around with the genetics system in other ways. You might try to carefully re-create a real-life couple or family to see what kind of genetics they pass on. Or, you might toss some alien DNA into the family tree to see what happens, as The Sims 2 also lets you create aliens from outer space that you can marry off to humans, if that's what floats your boat.

More importantly, sims maintain their family ties (assuming you don't have any dramatic family squabbles), so if you decide to really hunker down and build out an extended clan, you can start with a carefully designed family or group of families, let them get married, and let them have children. You can then watch the children grow up and move out into their own places. And since sims are still autonomous and go about their lives even without supervision, you can expect to later receive visits from doting grandparents (or mooching grandchildren, depending on whose household you decide to control). Again, like memories, these are features that will reveal their rewards with the extra time and effort you choose to spend on them.

Sims 2 pets full iSO

The Sims 2: PetsThe Pets expansion adds an interesting wrinkle to The Sims 2 but won't set the world, or even your sims' house, on fire.

The Sims 2 remains a popular and difficult-to-describe strategy game that lets you control the lives of little computer people in the house you build for them, as they love, grow old, have families, chase their dreams, and occasionally use the potty. The series is known for offering zany humor, colorful graphics, a gibberish language that its "sim" characters speak (known as "simlish"), cheerful music, and numerous retail expansion packs. And the most recent expansion, The Sims 2: Pets, doesn't break with tradition, so to speak. It adds domestic dogs, cats, birds, and rodents to The Sims 2, along with plenty of new items. If you weren't already a fan of the series, it seems doubtful that Pets will change your mind, but the expansion still adds plenty of content that will definitely be of interest to experienced players looking to add more to their Sims 2 experience in any way they can.

Pets act as brand-new family members, although hamsters and birds generally stay put in their cages. For these smaller pets, you can feed them; play with them to give your sims some social contact; and in the case of birds, teach them to talk to improve your charisma. Dogs and cats can be much more interesting. You can create canines and felines from a great number of different breeds and are given tons of different customization options that let you choose size, age, different ear types, fur color patterns, and even some minor pet accoutrements, like collars. You can also determine your pet's personality, such as whether your pet is friendly or aloof, neat or messy, and quick to learn new tricks or a bit slower on the draw. If those last sentences got you excited, there's a good chance that The Sims 2: Pets is for you.

That's because pets--dogs and cats, anyway--function like limited people in the game. You can't take direct control of dogs or cats, but you can teach them new skills (pet tricks) by spending virtual hours (which equates to several minutes of real time) of your day training them until they learn how to sit, shake hands, and roll over. This system is similar to how you can improve your sims' marketability by spending virtual hours repeatedly training at skills like charisma, repair, and cleaning. You can use interactions with them to fulfill your sims' social needs (so yes, you can play as a "crazy cat lady" who associates only with her house cats), just like you can with live-in family members. And you can even send your pets off on different career paths. If you care to, you can have Fido pursue an exciting career in show biz, for instance, and just like in the original Sims games, in Pets an increasingly nice car will pull up to your sims' house to pick them up as they climb the professional ladder and whisk them away for hours on end, until they return home later that day with an honest-to-goodness paycheck. These new options open up a slightly different avenue for gameplay than having just another roommate.

Cats and dogs can also interact with each other, and based on the personality you've given them, they may get into fights with the neighbors' pets or get friendly with them, even to the point of building up a relationship that leads to a new litter of puppies or kittens. In the meantime, if you happen to care about your house's property value, your dogs and cats are always works in progress, since you must constantly catch even the best-behaved pets in the act of destroying furniture, digging up the yard, or relieving themselves in the house so that you can scold them--which teaches them not to do such things. (Alternately, if you care to, you can try to breed the biggest jerk of a cat or dog in SimCity by repeatedly praising your pet for destructive behavior and then turning it loose downtown.) Either way, patterning your pets' behavior is surprisingly time consuming and not always convenient--if you want to have a well-behaved pet, you have to always keep an eye on it and constantly drop what you're doing to dash over and scold or praise it--and once you get there, actually giving your pet that feedback takes a little while, too. It also seems to take quite some time before constant scolding or praising sinks in with even the brightest pets...and if you decide to have any of your sims take a job, or to send you pet out to the workforce, that just means less time for your sims to spend together teaching your pets.

This is the main issue with the way cats and dogs work in the game--trying to create the perfect pet, or even a decent one, is difficult to schedule in the bustling world of The Sims 2, where your sims are also trying to make it in the working world themselves, build up their own skill points, pursue their wants and life goals, and take care of their own personal needs for food, rest, and social interaction. This is to say nothing of the other Sims 2 expansions' gameplay features, like University's influence system, Nightlife's group outing and dating system, or Open for Business' start-your-own-company system. If you try to pursue any or all these different gameplay styles, they'll just put even more time constraints between you and nurturing and developing your pet. You can try to either double up on pets, or on family members, and micromanage each sim, and experienced Sims 2 players may indeed take that approach as the toughest challenge yet--juggling a household, a cadre of cronies, a steady girlfriend, a burgeoning home business, and a happy dog or cat. Most other players will probably have trouble keeping up with the conflicting needs of both their sims and pets, which are both demanding and require separate blocks of time in any given virtual day.

Otherwise, the expansion adds some welcome new music tracks that fit in just fine with the game, along with well-suited animal noises (dogs barking, cats purring, and so on) that are just as expressive as the still-upbeat gibberish "simlish" language that sims use to communicate with each other, and now to coo at and criticize their animal friends. While the expansion doesn't add a new set of out-of-home "lots," the out-of-home areas that sims can visit by calling a cab, it does add plenty of new objects both for lots, such as pet-shop stalls if you own Open for Business; pet supplies, including scratching posts, doggie chew toys, aviaries, and so on; plus new household items. The new additions look just fine and seem to fit in very well with The Sims 2's colorful, if perhaps no longer cutting-edge, appearance.

Even though it does add a decent-sized chunk of new content to the original game, The Sims 2: Pets isn't about redefining the Sims 2 experience or winning over any new converts. It seems to be for players who already know and love The Sims 2, who will actually spend time layering spots and colored patches onto a dog's fur, or who find the idea of having a starlet house cat bringing home the bacon (while the deadbeat family sits at home and plays pinball all day) to be hilarious.
